Immediately after the put-in at the bridge that marks the end of the Campbells Farm Portage comes a testing small rapid. At normal race levels it can only be approached on the left, where the river channels against the steep left hand bank as it goes over several drops as it turns right. Boat speed is critical and try to paddle positively to stay on the inside or middle of the flow, rather than run the risks associated with getting forced against the banks and vegetation on the outside of this fast flowing rapid.
At a fuller level it is possible to take this rapid down the centre, where there is a steeper but straighter drop that is good fun with little major risks associated.
From Tegwaan to the Guinea Fowl portage takeout there are numerous small rocky rapids that require proactive river reading and positive paddling.
The top runners will carry on running after the Campbell’s check point but if you’re weak on the portages then putting in here is certainly worth considering.
Tegwaan is a nice, splashing, rollercoaster of a rapid which will cool you down after the portage and if you hug the left hand bank then you shouldn’t have any problems. |
